Over 700 veterans, age 55 and over, from across the country will participate this month in what has become America’s largest sporting event for senior military veterans. This will be the 27th year for the National Veterans Golden Age Games. The games will take place in Buffalo, New York from May 30th – June 4th. The games are sponsored by the VA as part of a commitment to the preventative and therapeutic value of fitness. Through this event, the VA strives to introduce older veterans to the benefits of sports and recreation.
The games include 15 events such as swimming, cycling, bowling, and croquet. The program is the only one of its kind and is designed to improve the quality of life for all older veterans, including those with a wide range of disabilities.
The Golden Age Games is also a qualifier for the National Senior Games (part of the U.S. Olympic Committee). Through this program, top finishers in the Golden Age Games have the opportunity to further compete among America’s elite senior athletes in the U.S. Olympic arena.
The Games are open to all military veterans, age 55 or older, who are currently receiving care at a VA medical facility. For more information please visit www.veteransgoldenagegames.va.gov.
